1948 Crosley – Custom “Woody” Conversion

1948 Crosley – Woody Conversion & Custom Woodwork This 1948 Crosley arrived after what could kindly be called a half-finished restoration: completely missing all of its iconic wood panels and lacking the warmth and charm that define a true classic “woody.” The metal body was intact, but without the wood, it simply wasn’t a woody.

The entire project focused on one thing – bringing back that authentic woody character through expert woodwork.

Scope of Work: Custom Wood Panels We templated every inlay directly from the Crosley body to ensure perfect fitment. All new panels were hand-fabricated from clear oak:

  • Side panels, tailgate, and accents precisely cut and shaped

  • Additional oak touches added inside the tailgate for enhanced detail

Every piece was crafted to follow the original Crosley woody design while elevating the quality far beyond factory.

Fabrication & Fitment Fitment on a vintage woody is everything. Each panel was:

  • Carefully measured and templated

  • Cut, shaped, and test-fitted multiple times

  • Adjusted for perfect alignment along every curve, joint, and body line

The result: seamless integration with the metal body, as if the wood had always been there.

Finishing All panels received a rich golden oak stain to highlight the natural grain, followed by multiple coats of marine-grade clear on both sides. This finish delivers:

  • Deep, lasting protection against weather and UV

  • Preserved natural wood beauty

  • Durability suited for years of enjoyment

Outcome The transformation is stunning. What rolled in as an incomplete shell left as a proper, head-turning woody with clean lines, authentic style, and craftsmanship that stands out at any show or cruise. The clear oak panels and flawless fitment give it that classic postwar charm – now built to last.

Before and after photos below showcase the full change: from missing all wood to a complete, authentic woody appearance.
